Position Summary
The Trash Removal Custodian (Waste Technician / Porter) focuses on collection, transport, and proper disposal of trash and recyclables in commercial facilities. You will pull bags and empty receptacles on assigned routes, replace liners, keep dumpster/compactor and waste-room areas clean, and report missing containers or hazards. This role is physically demanding and route-oriented—ideal for dependable team members who take pride in keeping buildings and docks orderly while floor robots and detail crews handle other scopes.
Essential Duties
- Collect trash and recyclables from offices, restrooms, break rooms, corridors, docks, and other assigned areas on a set route and schedule
- Empty receptacles into carts or bags; replace liners; segregate waste streams (trash, recycling, and any site-specific streams) per client and regulatory requirements
- Transport waste to dumpsters, compactors, or designated disposal rooms; operate compactors or tippers only when trained and authorized
- Keep dumpster pads, waste rooms, service corridors, and loading-dock trash areas clean and free of debris; pressure-wash or hose areas when assigned and trained
- Note and report damaged, missing, or overflowing containers; notify supervisor of spills, pests, or unsafe conditions
- Assist with bulk trash pulls, cardboard, and periodic cleanouts as scheduled
- Follow PPE, lifting, and path-of-travel safety rules; post wet-floor or hazard signs when cleaning disposal areas
- May perform light porter support (spill response, lobby/trash touch-ups, restocking liners/supplies) as directed—primary focus remains waste removal
- Maintain carts, dollies, and related equipment; report equipment issues promptly
- Complete route checklists and communicate handoffs with Floor Crew and Janitor teammates
- Comply with OSHA, client site rules, and any healthcare or aviation waste-handling procedures applicable to the account
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications / Requirements
- Ability to follow verbal and written route instructions; dependable attendance and punctuality
- Physical stamina for continuous walking, lifting, and pushing/pulling carts for a full shift
- Willingness to work evenings, overnights, weekends, and occasional holidays as client schedules require
- Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States
- Ability to pass a background check (and site-specific screening where required)
- High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience accepted
- Prior porter, warehouse, laborer, janitorial, or waste-handling experience preferred but not always required
- Valid driver’s license preferred if the role includes multi-site driving or company vehicle use
Preferred Qualifications
- 6–12+ months commercial trash porter, dock, or custodial experience
- Experience operating trash compactors, balers, or powered carts/tugs (training provided where required)
- Familiarity with recycling separation and facility waste-room procedures
- Experience in retail centers, industrial plants, airports, hospitals, hotels, or large multi-tenant buildings
- Comfortable working outdoors at docks in varying weather
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
- Strong teamwork and clear communication with supervisors and other crews
Physical Demands
- Continuous walking, standing, bending, and reaching for most of the shift
- Frequent lifting and carrying of bags and containers—typically up to 40–50 lbs; heavier loads with assistance or equipment
- Pushing/pulling loaded carts, dollies, or bins; occasional overhead reaching when loading carts or dumpsters
- Work indoors and outdoors, including docks, tunnels, and waste rooms; exposure to odors, weather, noise, and cleaning chemicals
- Required PPE may include gloves, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, slip-resistant shoes, and other gear as assigned
- Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions
Schedule / Shift
Trash pulls for commercial accounts are often after-hours or overnight so docks and interiors are clear before open; some day routes exist for high-traffic sites. Full-time and part-time schedules may be available. Exact hours and routes vary by facility—discuss preferred availability when you apply.
